On April 7, the opening of the sculptural portrait of the outstanding scientist-metallurgist, researcher, teacher, tireless organizer of science and education, public figure, rector of the Kiev Polytechnic (1952-1955), director of the Institute of Metal Physics named after KPI was held at the NTUU “KPI”. V. Kurdyumov National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1955-1985), the founder of the specialty “Physics of metals” in the KPI Academician Vitaly Nikiforovich Gridnev (1908-1990).
At the beginning of the triumphant event, which was held with the participation of the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Academician B. E. Paton, the guests, accompanied by the rector of the University of the academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine M.Z. Zgurovsky, representatives of the administration and the public laid flowers to the monument of Paton.
Celebrations to commemorate the memory of VN Grydnev took place in the hall of Building 9 of the IFF. The Rector of the University M.Z.Zgurovsky addressed the participants of the meeting, who recalled the life and creative path of Academician VNGridnev and informed that, given the great merits of the scientist and teacher in the development of NTUU “KPI”, on the initiative of the Department of Physics of Metals, the Scientific Council NTUU “KPI” adopted a decision, supported by the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Institute of Metal Physics. GV Kurdyumov, the Institute of Problems of Materials Science named after I.M. Frantsevich, commemorating his memory: the establishment of a sculptural portrait in the building No. 9, the construction of a memorial laboratory, the foundation of a nominal scholarship for students.
Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine M.Z. Zgurovsky, in particular, noted: “The history of Ukrainian science knows many glorious names worthy of decorating the intellectual treasury of the world civilization, but when it comes to such ascetics of progress as Vitaly Nikiforovich Gridnev, it becomes clear that some people by nature is given to unite the abilities of an outstanding scientist, a rare pedagogue, an indefatigable organizer of science and education, an outstanding public figure.
Several generations of scientists, scientific and technical staff, teachers and students knew Vitaly Nikiforovich as the rector of the KPI, Academician-Secretary of the Physics Department of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, the founder of scientific directions, among which the speed of heat hardening of steels and alloys.
About Vitaly Nikiforovichi, it can rightly said that steel was hardened for them, the scientific cadres of physics of metals and materials experts were forged. Heading in the CPI the Department of Heat Treatment and Metal Physics, Academician V.N. Gridnev not only prepared a qualified staff for the Institute of Metal Physics, but also brought up a brilliant pleiad of KPI graduates. Among them: Academicians Viktor Ivanovich Trefilov, Vladimir Vladimirovich Nemoskalenko and Yulia Vladimirovich Naidich, corresponding members Sergey Alekseevich Firstov, Yury Milman, Alexander V. Kurdyumov, Yury N. Koval, Stanislav Petrovich Oshkaderov, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Mikhailovich Dykhne. “

From the memories of Academician V.N. Gridnev
The founder of the department of the specialty ” Metal Physics ” V.N. Gridnev conscientiously prepared for performances before the student audience.
Among the abstracts prepared by Vitaly Nikiforovich, we would like to quote it written before the Day of Knowledge on September 1, 1976. It laconically, but deeply reveals the views of the scientist on the specialty, dedication to the work, to the work of researchers. “Science must be done with our own hands!” – this testament of VN Gridnev is still one of the basic premises of the Department of Metal Physics in the organization of the educational process.
“The higher school is called upon to train highly qualified engineers for work in workshops, in factory laboratories, in research institutes, design bureaus. Engineers are needed with good training, armed with an arsenal of theoretical and practical knowledge. But the main thing is those who love their specialty.”
All three of the specialties presented in this classroom are close enough both for the preparation and the nature of the practical activity and it seems to me that in the not too distant future it will be even more to bring together the curricula and, if to do a narrow specialization, this is to be done in the last year due to course and diploma projects.
