The European Union will set up its own agency for biomedical research and will convene a global health summit in Italy next year to prepare for future pandemics, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.
As a first step, it is proposed to strengthen and expand the capacity of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and ECDC, our European Center for Disease Prevention and Control.
As a second step, the creation of the European BARDA (Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority), an agency for advanced biomedical research and development. This new agency will maintain the ability and readiness to respond to threats beyond national boundaries and emergencies, whether natural or intentional (intentional).
